Real Urban EDC Kit: What To Prepare For Part One

What's in our kit?

What are the unique requirement of a real urban EDC kit?

What are the most common disruptions to everyday modern urban life?

What kids of things do we really need to prepare for?

There are a list of events that rage from common to rare.

They also range in severity.

So when it comes to modern urban EDC selection, it usually comes down to choosing things that are lightweight, versatile, durable, and stylish.

Prepping for Common, Everyday Events

  • Staying warm and dry- a thing waterproof windbreaker with a hood that tucks into the collar. Also works indoors when the air conditioning gets too low.
  • Cutting and small screws- small Swiss Army knife, the smaller the better. Get it in black and throw it on your keychain. Mostly used just for the scissors.
  • Power- rechargeable power bank for cell phones, tablets, and other devices. Our favorite has the cords built in, additional ports, and plugs directly in the wall to recharge.
  • Travel-friendly multitool- Gerber makes one with non-metal saw blade that is removable and built to accept jigsaw blades, no knife, and sliding action over butterfly action.
  • Eco-friendly container- big fans of buying a new reusable metal water bottle from the convenience store. Sometimes you have to ditch the container spontaneously, and these give you the benefit of being reusable yet disposable without being plastic.
  • Hygiene- wet wipes, deodorant, cologne, band aids, lip balm.
  • Light- headlamp and second rechargeable power pack with built-in lamp.
  • Stationary- Rite in the Rain notepads because they will also resist sweat, with at least a couple of pencils or pens, in a slim-line aluminum form holder from Office Depot. This is also to keep paper documents safe during transport.
  • Fashion accessories- Sunglasses and a watch.

Modern urban living presumes the ability to resupply, so carrying around too many creature comforts isn't necessary.

This would be considered "line two" gear, with your concealed EDC traveler's money belt as your "line one" gear.
